If you like 1920's? Try http://www.amazon.com/Elijah-Rising-Lyn-LeJeune/dp/1935725084/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1310946856&sr=1-1

"They came in gray tailored frocks with braided edges and striped trousers ...

This is how the rich experience the war: Last night I was at last ready to tell Mother that was I leaving. But she’d gone to dinner at Churchill’s, attending one of the patriotic reviews that had become the thing in dinning entertainment. When she came home she was escorted by several young men in Khaki uniform, their faces were flushed from the night air and too much liquor. And with them were their girls, all clothed in dresses that went up to their calves, spangles shimmered around their necks, and their mouths were painted dark red. They all looked the same, reflected like chimeras in the long Venetian mirror that adorned the library wall. They laughed unceasingly and begged mother to turn on the radio. “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” was blasting and I longed to escape the assault of the night. The young men twirled their girls around until midnight. Then they all kissed Mother on the cheek and yelled adieu and we’re off to see the Kaiser. Mother was high in color, more than I had seen her in ages, as though the war had given her back her youth."

Loved your thoughts on one of my very favorite series! I agree with you about the second series, I think the Anna/Bates relationship has taken an interesting twist, but the Mary/Matthew thing does seem a bit worn out. But I do believe that it may be demonstrating Mary's maturity (as you mentioned), because I think the "old" Mary we knew from season 1 would have crushed Matthew's fiancee like a little bug. Instead we find her gasp! showing a bit of compassion for the girl. I can't wait to see how these stories play out. Great post!

When my son was born, his pediatrician said to take him to his first dental visit when he turned three. We obeyed. And when he was three years and a handful of days, we discovered that our pediatrician is a total dumbass. The child already had a mouthful of cavities. Like, eleven. Thanks for that great parenting advice, pal.

Of course I completely blamed myself; that is my default mode. But it turned out to just be his teeth.

It sucks, but I love your perspective--better bad teeth than bad something more important.

I have the exact same problem. I have at least 4 cavities every time I go to the dentist and I already have 2 crowns in my mouth. At 22! One of them was from an awful root canal that took 2 visits to the dentist to finish, and the other is from a tooth that broke on a Mike and Ike. Yes, that is the CHEWY fruit flavored candy. I floss every day and brush my teeth morning, noon, and night. I don't drink a thing that contains sugar (other than milk) and I rarely eat candy. I always feel awful when I feel a tooth ache coming on because I know that a lot of money is about to be put into my already filling full mouth. It's depressing to know that no matter what I do my teeth are just not up to the task. Dentures won't be so bad, I guess. At least they can't get cavities.
